You've Got Hate Mail
By Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore
Directed By James Calvert

03 Jun. 11 - 18 Jun. 11

Local comedy specialists Mellow Drama are producing a hit new off-Broadway play next month.

You’ve Got Hate Mail is an hilarious farce told entirely through emails sent from laptops, iPhones and BlackBerries – a broadband comedy of errors for the Internet generation.

The story focuses on Richard, a young high-flying lawyer who can’t keep his hands to himself. In an attempt to keep his wife, Stefanie, happy at home he buys her a laptop and opens her up to the world of online communication.

Unfortunately for him, one fateful day Richard accidently sends an email to Stefanie which had actually been intended for his lover, Wanda. As you can imagine, things go rapidly downhill from there.

What ensues is a frantic and hysterical story packed with twists and turns as the couple’s best friends – Peg and George – get caught up in the tangled web of lies, deceit and naked photographs of Hilary Clinton.

Written by Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore, You’ve Got Hate Mail has been loved by audiences and received wide critical acclaim. The New York Post described it as “the perfect bedroom farce!”, Show Business said “it doesn’t get better than this!” and Star Ledger wrote “LOL! The audience is guaranteed to do just that - Laugh Out Loud!”

The local production of You’ve Got Hate Mail stars John Montanaro, Julia Calvert, Wesley Ellul, Pia Zammit and Jo Caruana.

The play will run for three weekends in June from the 3-5, 10-12 and 17-19. All shows start at 8pm. Additionally there will be two special late night shows on Saturday the 11th and Saturday 18th starting at 10pm.

Tickets for the opening weekend cost €10 while tickets for all other performances cost €15. Booking can be made by visiting the St James Cavalier website www.sjcav.org or by calling 2122 3200.

Due to the adult nature of the content, the play is only open to mature audience members aged 18 or over.

Starring:

Jo Caruana
Jo Caruana - Jo Caruana trained locally at the Stagecoach School for Performing Arts before continuing her studies in Edinburgh at Queen Margaret's University where she gained a degree in Drama and Arts Journalism. Local credits to date include Cinderella in Cinderella the Panto, Penny in Hairspray!, Dorothy in The Wiz and Mimi in Allo Allo (FM Theatre); Candy Bambay in Death of a Doornail, Penelope in Hercules: The Panto and Ariel in Pirates of the Mediterranean (MADC); The Sex Comedies, Jill in Equus and Cate in Blasted (Unifaun Theatre); Ruth in Is It Me (The Carmelite Priory) and many nutty characters in Loveplay (Pagoni). Jo currently runs writing company Writemeanything.com and edits Style on Sunday Magazine, while also working as a freelance journalist.

John Montanaro
John Montanaro -

John started acting at the age of 16 when he took part in a production of the play whose name we cannot mention (just in case). Next up was a small part in HMS Pinafore where he met Pia who introduced him to the world of MADC. Since then John has never looked back, taking part in many one-acts, pantos, musicals and farces at a wide variety of venues. He also enjoyed an entertaining stint as Gabriel in the television series Angli. His recent shows for Mellow Drama include Kissing Sid James, An Evening with Gary Lineker, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), Unoriginal Sin, All the Great Books (abridged) and Gasping. Throughout his acting career, John has always enjoyed making people laugh and that is why he jumped at the chance to be a co-founder of Mellow Drama.

Julia Calvert
Julia Calvert -

Julia has always enjoyed acting and, from an early age showed signs of her future calling when locking her grandparents in a room and forcing them to watch her perform. She took this evident enthusiasm and fine tuned it in England where she studied theatre. Her roles on stage, both in the UK and Malta, have seen her tackle a huge variety of different types of theatre because, as she says, it’s always nice to try out different things. She proves this with her jump from the thespian stage with leading roles in Othello and Tempest to her dive into the more somber world of Six Character in Search of an Author and Medea. However, her love for comedy overrides all and she feels in her true element when on stage providing the audience with a good laugh. From Perfect Wedding to An Evening with Gary Lineker and from Kissing Sid James to The 39 Steps, Julia is most at home when bringing smiles to people’s faces.

Pia Zammit
Pia Zammit -

Wesley Ellul
Wesley Ellul - Wesley has been actively involved in the Maltese theatre scene for well over a decade, performing a variety of roles on stage and an even larger variety of roles of it, from sound engineer to artistic director of MADC. His acting exploits include a list of pantos, musicals, plays and one-acts that is far too long to mention here. Suffice it to say he has rarely turned down a part. In anything. Ever. In 2002 he moved into the directing scene winning the club's one-act play festival with Shakespeare's a Dick. Since then he has directed a wide variety of pieces from satirical pieces like Edward Albee's An American Dream to Robert Farquhar's Bad Jazz, to musical theatre pieces such as Spring Awakening: A New Musical! Most recently Wesley's has returned to his comic roots directing comedies for Mellow Drama including My First Time and the Reduced Shakespeare Company’s All the Great Books (Abridged). This will be Wesley's second acting role for Mellow Drama following the 2010 critically acclaimed comedy "Talk Thirty to Me"!
